Phinizy Swamp Nature Center
I think that Phinizy Swamp is one of the most overlooked resources in Augusta GA. Some people may not realize what a cool place it is to visit. It’s located on 1100 acres adjacent to the Augusta Regional Airport. From the Bobby Jones Expressway, take the airport exit, head toward the airport, and look for the sign. The driveway into the park will be on your left.

When we visit, we usually park at the silos (you can’t miss them) and head down the nature trail from there. There are several miles of trail that wind through the woods, over a stream, and around several ponds before ending up back at the nature center and the boardwalks over the swamp.

If you have kids, it’s a great place for them to take their bikes. It’s also a great place for runners/walkers and nature lovers on the lookout for wildlife. Pets are also welcome as long as they’re on leashes and you clean up after them.Phinizy Swamp Nature Center

Phinizy Swamp also hosts a variety of events on a monthly basis. This month (March) there will be a couple of Adopt-A-Stream workshops. In April, there will be a Songbird Walk on April 10th from 8-11am. Cost is $5. Also, on April 17th there will be a 5K run. The cost for the race is $23 which includes a t-shirt. They’ve hosted digital photography classes in the past as well. If you have questions about other events, or would like to sign up for an event, you can contact the Southeastern Natural Sciences Academy at 706-828-2109

The park is open noon to dusk Monday thru Friday, and dawn to dusk on Saturday, Sunday, and holidays.
