Historic homes

If you’re looking at homes in Augusta GA, and have only been looking at Columbia County homes, you may not realize that there are a wide array of beautiful historic homes in Augusta GA. If you’re looking for homes with style, substance, and character, you’ll find everything from simple cottages to mansions with elaborate architectural details. You just have to know where to look…

Most of the homes are located in Richmond County. The Hill and Summerville in Augusta are the two main areas in which to look. These neighborhood areas which surround Walton Way are an area rich in history. Many homes here have been renovated to include modern amenities in addition to the original historic details. Others are historical diamonds in the rough waiting for the right Augusta homeowner to come along and polish them up to showcase their fabulous historic architectural details.

These historic homes on The Hill and in Summerville range from $50,000 cottages to $1,850,000 historic masterpieces. You can easily find a 2 bedroom 1000 heated square foot cottage, a 6 bedroom 7500 heated square foot circa 1881 mansion with manicured gardens, and everything in between. One of the homes that you’ll find in Summerville was extensively remodeled circa 1910 by legendary architect H.T.E. Wendell as the winter home of a New York department store magnate. There is also a circa 1926 Italianate style home designed by architect Willis Irvin, a competitor of Frank Lloyd Wright. My personal favorite is a circa 1926 Willis Irvin designed 3 story Tudor.

One last thing – a perhaps unexpected benefit for families buying one of these historic homes in Augusta GA is that Richmond County students can audition for acceptance to Davidson Fine Arts Magnet High School – one of the top ranking schools in GA. It was also ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the Top 100 schools in the nation!
